Many stereo systems and surround sound systems are not putting out the quality of sound many would come to expect from the price they've paid. In some cases the cause is simple, the speaker wire.
Speaker wire comes in many different sizes, and as with all wire, the size of the wire is determined in "gauge". Some may be confused with what is what, but to put the sizes of speaker more simply, the smaller the gauge number, the bigger the wire is. In example, 8 gauge wire is twice the size in radius as 16 gauge wire.
The thicker the wire, the less resistence it carries, and so the sound quality travels faster and more clear. This does not mean you should buy the biggest gauge possible however. Please check your owners manual for many of them will suggest a gauge of wire to use for the best sound quality. And just to make a small note: the standard wire sizes used in car stereos are 18-16 gauge, though most would recommend 14-12 gauge.
