Alkaline batteries are the most common dry cell battery and are used in everything from cameras and flashlights to remote controls. They are small, sealed and, non-rechargeable.
Currently waste alkaline batteries cannot be used to make new batteries. However, they can be recycled. In Washington State, businesses are required to recycle their waste alkaline batteries if they accumulate 220 pounds or more per month. All Battery Sales and Service consolidates and transports the spent alkaline batteries to an end site recycler for reclamation. The waste batteries are processed and taken to a steel mill where they are used as feed stock. The zinc from the batteries is fumed off into a vacuum bag house for recovery, while the end metal product is used to make low grade steel like rebar. No part of the waste battery is sent to a land fill or incinerated. Other disposal methods called “recycling” send their waste batteries to EPA approved land fills or incinerate the waste batteries.
The price to transport and recycle alkaline batteries is $0.70 per pound. A 5 gallon bucket would hold about 70 pounds of alkaline, or $49.00 cost to responsibly recycle.
